Online Red Dog Poker Strategy

Red Dog is a simple un-poker like game that carries a poker name. If you like playing poker and making poker-like decisions, this game may not be for you. If you just want to have a relaxing time wagering on the spreads of card values, then you’ll enjoy Red Dog Poker online.

Rules of Red Dog Poker

In Red Dog Poker, players are dealt two cards face up. Each card has a numerical value. Cards 2 through 10 are valued at 2 through 10. Jacks are 11, queens are 12, kings are 13 and an ace has the highest value at 14.

Players make bets before they are issued their cards. After seeing their cards, players can choose to wager additional cash (so long as it doesn’t exceed the amount of their initial wager).

Matching Cards

When a player is dealt two matching cards, a third card is dealt. If the third card matches the first two, then the player’s bet is paid off 11 to 1. Based on these odds, you can understand that this does not happen very frequently. If the third card does not match the first two, the hand is a push, and the player gets to keep his or her bet.

Consecutive Cards

If consecutive cards are dealt, then the hand is a push, and the player gets to keep his or her bet.

Spread

When the cards dealt do not match, and when they are not in sequential order, then the dealer announces the spread. The spread is the amount of cards that are in between your first two cards. It’s the distance between the two card values. If you’ve been dealt a 6 and a Jack, then the spread is four. If you’re dealt a 3 and a 5, the spread is one.

Based on this spread, you decide whether or not you want to make an additional wager. When you are dealt your third card, and the card does not fall within the spread of your first two cards, then you lose your bet. If the third card is within the spread you get paid based on this table:

      • 1-card spread pays 5:1
      • 2-card spread pays 4:1
      • 3-card spread pays 3:1
      • Any other spread pays 1:1

Red Dog Poker Strategy

Red Dog is a simple game, so the strategy is equally simple. If you have a high spread (like more than seven), you should bet more. If your spread is slim, don’t keep betting. The higher your spread, the better your chances. Keep low-spreads low-risk and bet big on the high ones.

Red Dog is not a very strategically-intensive game. Still, it is game where you have choices, and whenever you have choices, there’s always a strategy. If you want to enjoy the simplicity of Red Dog, make sure you don’t raise the stakes when your spread is too low.
